Highrise captures the essence of early 2000s social hubs like Habbo Hotel but upgrades it for the modern mobile era. The community-driven aspect is its strongest suit; you’re not just playing a game, you’re inhabiting a space. The level of detail in the pixel art fashion is impressive, and the 'Grab' system (their version of gacha) keeps the hunt for rare items exciting.
However, it’s worth noting that it is a very social-heavy experience. If you aren't looking to chat or trade, you might miss out on the core fun. For those who enjoy digital fashion and community building, it’s arguably the best in its class. The economy is robust, and the developers are very active in releasing new content and seasonal events.
I remember when this was the gold standard for showing off what an iPhone could do. Years later, it's still... well, it's still just swiping your finger. It's a primitive satisfaction, like popping bubble wrap. The Arcade version is mercifully free of the predatory 'pay-to-win' blades that ruined the later iterations, which I appreciate.
But let’s be real: as a 40-year-old, I need more than five minutes of this before I start wondering why I’m wasting my time. It’s shallow. It’s repetitive. It’s a fine distraction for a child in a waiting room, but for a serious gamer, it’s a relic of a simpler time. It does what it intends to do, but what it intends to do isn't particularly interesting anymore. A decent time-sink for exactly three days.
Performance: Perfectly fluid; the touch response is still among the best in the genre.
Buy if: You want mindless, tactile action to pass a few minutes of downtime.
Skip if: You value depth, strategy, or modern game design.
Available on: iPhone, iPad, iPod
